Police issued the largest fine in the Dubrovnik-Neretva County last week to a 70-year-old. In addition to fleeing the scene of an accident, he drove an unregistered car and disturbed public order by shouting.
A 70-year-old Croatian citizen committed a series of traffic violations in Metković on Friday, resulting in a hefty fine and a new driving ban. Police officers from the Metković Police Station found him on August 7, 2026, in the afternoon, driving a passenger car with Dubrovnik license plates despite an existing driving ban.
During the drive, due to improper maneuvering, the 70-year-old caused a traffic accident with material damage. After the collision, he did not remain at the scene to exchange information but instead parked the vehicle improperly and fled. Following further criminal investigation, it was determined that the vehicle's registration had expired 15 days prior.
However, his legal troubles did not end there. During the police intervention and recording of the violations, the man further disturbed public peace and order by shouting and making noise in a public space.
Due to a series of violations under the Road Traffic Safety Act and the Public Order and Peace Act, the driver was immediately removed from traffic. The Metković Police Station issued him a misdemeanor order with a total fine of €2,390, along with an obligation to pay procedural costs of €23.89. Additionally, a new safety measure was imposed, prohibiting him from driving B-category vehicles for nine months.
The Dubrovnik-Neretva Police Department took this opportunity to appeal to all drivers to comply with legal provisions. They particularly highlighted the risk of driving under existing bans and the necessity of remaining at the scene of an accident to exchange information. They also announced continued intensive road surveillance and the strictest sanctioning of all forms of irresponsible behavior in traffic.
