Despite Highest Demand in the Mediterranean, Croatia Holds Record for Lowest Charter Prices

While occupancy of sailboats and catamarans is among the highest, prices are the lowest compared to competitors, and bookings have been declining for the fifth consecutive year

Summary
  • Croatia has one of the highest booking rates for sailboats (59.44%) and catamarans (58.30%) in the Mediterranean.
  • Despite this, the average rental of a sailboat (€355/person) and catamaran (€703/person) is the lowest in the region, often 20-37% lower than in Greece, Italy, Turkey, Spain, and France.
  • The booking rate for Croatian charter has been declining for five consecutive years and this season is the worst in recent years.
  • Low prices are attributed to intense competition, oversupply, and a possible strategic decision to position Croatia as an affordable nautical destination.

According to data collected by Yacht-Rent and published by Index.hr on July 29, 2026, Croatia continues to rank among the most sought-after charter destinations in the Mediterranean. However, the analysis reveals an unusual paradox: despite strong demand, rental prices for sailboats and catamarans are the lowest among all comparable countries.

Sailboats: Same Occupancy, Drastically Lower Price

The average booking rate for sailboats in Croatia currently stands at 59.44%, nearly identical to Greece (59.21%), and higher than in Italy, France, Spain, and Turkey. Yet, when comparing prices per person, the differences are staggering. Renting a sailboat in Croatia costs 355 euros per person, while in Greece it is 27% more expensive, in Italy 17%, in Spain 22%, and in Turkey as much as 37%. In other words, nearly the same occupancy rate does not translate into higher revenues for local charter companies.

Catamarans: Second in Bookings, Lowest Price

A similar situation repeats with catamarans. Croatia records the second-highest average booking rate (58.30%), just behind Greece (60.24%). However, the price of 703 euros per person is again the lowest among the analyzed countries. In Greece, the rental is 19% more expensive, in Turkey 16%, in Italy and France 24%, and in Spain as much as 35%.

Bookings Decline for Fifth Consecutive Year

Although Croatia continues to attract many sailors, this year's booking rate is the worst in recent years. As Index.hr reports, it has been declining for the fifth consecutive year. This trend suggests that even low prices are no longer sufficient to maintain previous occupancy levels.

Why Doesn't Croatia Raise Prices?

The Yacht-Rent analysis points to several possible reasons. A large number of charter companies and vessels creates fierce price competition; supply, by all accounts, has outpaced demand, so prices are lowered to fill capacity. At the same time, it may be a deliberate strategy to position Croatia as an affordable nautical destination compared to Greece, Italy, France, Spain, and Turkey. However, the five-year decline in bookings shows that this strategy may no longer be yielding the expected results.
