Denmark officially extended its mandatory military service from four months to 11 months starting Monday, August 3, 2026. The first cohort of about 1,600 conscripts began their training at the Oksbøl military base in the west of the country, marking the implementation of a decision made back in 2024 as a direct consequence of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Colonel Michael Villumsen left no room for doubt about the reasons behind this move. "Look to the east. Do I need to say more? Of course, it's about the security situation regarding Russia and what it could do if NATO doesn't react," he told AFP. "Today, NATO is taking measures, and Denmark's contribution is precisely the rapid strengthening of our combat readiness through conscription," he added.
The reform brings more than just a longer service period. For the first time in history, Denmark has included women in mandatory military service, with women making up about 20 percent of the new conscripts this year. Additionally, there are plans to significantly increase the total number of conscripts from the current 5,000 to 7,500 annually by 2033.
The structure of the service itself has also changed. According to sources, basic training lasts between three and five months, focusing on fundamental military skills such as weapons handling, first aid, and physical fitness. Finnish public broadcaster YLE reports that the five-month basic training is followed by six months of operational service. Conscripts will also be trained in new specializations, including drone operation and surveillance.
The enhanced training comes at a time when Denmark plans to send its conscripts to Greenland, an autonomous territory under the Danish crown. According to YLE, later this month, more than 100 soldiers will be deployed to the island for a month to take over operational tasks from professional soldiers.
This decision carries additional political weight given that U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed a desire to annex Greenland to the United States, a move that both the Danish and Greenlandic governments have firmly rejected. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated in July 2026 at the NATO summit in Ankara that Denmark is ready to defend every inch of the alliance's territory, "including our own."
In Denmark, military service remains largely voluntary. Young people first apply as volunteers, and only if the quota is not filled are the rest selected randomly.
