Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Voyah announced on August 13, 2026, that its production model Passion S successfully completed a 360-degree tunnel loop, driving partially upside down. The maneuver was performed in a test tunnel in Wuhan, and the entire feat was captured in a single continuous shot.
According to the manufacturer, the car underwent no special structural modifications, and no special effects were used in the final footage. Voyah emphasized that a production-spec Passion S with a full battery and driver assistance systems was used, aiming to show that behind the spectacular video lies a carefully executed test, not just a flashy marketing stunt.
For the car to complete a full loop inside the tunnel, it was essential to maintain sufficient speed and the correct trajectory. According to technical analyses reported by Kurir.rs, the Passion S had to enter the curved section at approximately 130 km/h, with a steering angle of about 16 degrees.
Once the car reached the top of the circular path, the speed had to be high enough for the centripetal force to keep it on track. This was the most critical part of the maneuver: too little speed could cause a loss of contact with the tunnel surface, while any significant error in trajectory could disrupt the entire pass.
Modern electric drivetrains have several characteristics that could have helped, including instant torque, precise traction control, and a battery pack mounted low in the chassis.
This feat has clear automotive inspiration. Sixteen years after Michael Schumacher drove through a tunnel in a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG for a commercial, Voyah decided to pull off a similar stunt. However, this time, an electric model took the spotlight.
Voyah did not hide the connection to the old ad but used it as a starting point for a new endeavor. The company wanted to prove that the car genuinely drove through the tunnel, which is why they released footage of the entire drive in one take. This approach was meant to dispel any doubts about the use of special effects or post-production editing.
Behind the successful footage were failed attempts. As reported by CarNewsChina, one of the early attempts involved a camouflaged prototype, but the car failed to make it through the entire tunnel. A video of one such attempt was also shown, where the vehicle fails to stay on the tunnel ceiling.
This clearly demonstrates that precision was key to success. The car had to reach the right speed, maintain its trajectory, and continue without sudden changes that could upset the balance. Even an intervention by the stability system that reduced power at the wrong moment could jeopardize the entire pass. Therefore, the successful attempt depended not only on speed but also on its precise maintenance.
Although such a maneuver has no practical purpose in everyday traffic, the manufacturer used it as a way to demonstrate the car's control and capture public attention. Driving upside down through a tunnel is primarily a spectacular demonstration, not a new feature drivers should expect on their daily commutes.
Nevertheless, the fact that the Passion S managed to complete a full loop shows how crucial precise electric drivetrain control and modern handling systems can be in extreme conditions. In this way, Voyah achieved its goal: footage that is impossible to ignore.
