Summary
  • A Zagreb man paid €15.50 for three drinks on Vir, which is over 100 kuna.
  • He claims he didn't receive a receipt with individual prices, so he couldn't verify the cost of each item.
  • He complained that foreign tourists were given priority, while local guests waited 20 minutes for their drinks.
  • He believes that excessively high prices will eventually drive away foreign tourists as well.

A summer trip to the Adriatic coast ended with an unpleasant surprise for a Zagreb resident when he received a bill for three simple drinks at a catering establishment on the island of Vir. He had to shell out a total of €15.50 for an isotonic drink, lemonade, and a 0.33-liter beer, which is more than 100 kuna in the old currency.

"When I saw the total amount, I was taken aback," the Zagreb man told Dnevno.hr. He tried to decipher the price breakdown on the spot, but ran into an additional problem. "I tried to figure out how much the beer, lemonade, and isotonic drink each cost, but I couldn't work it out," he added.

No Receipt or Explanation

Due to the crowd in the place, he didn't immediately ask the waiter for clarification, so he left without an answer. On his way to his accommodation, he tried to figure out the individual prices himself. The average price per item would have been just over five euros, but the Zagreb man suspects the individual prices varied significantly.

"I understand it's the season and that hospitality businesses have higher costs. Still, €15.50 for a beer, lemonade, and an isotonic drink is not a small amount; that's over 100 kuna. I'd at least like to know how much each thing cost," he said.

Foreigners First

Beyond the price itself, what bothered him even more was the impression he got during his stay that the staff treated foreign tourists differently than local guests. "The prices are insane, folks. I can see that our hospitality workers value foreign tourists more. We waited 20 minutes for our drinks, while foreigners were served right away," he complained.

He added that this feeling isn't new to him and that it bothers him more and more each year. "In a few years, there won't be as many foreign tourists here because prices have gone through the roof, and then we locals will be good enough," he concluded.
