This August, Istria becomes the hub of gastronomic events celebrating local flavors and tradition. While Poreč hosted the 7th Istrian Garlic Festival last weekend, Vižinada is gearing up for the 28th edition of Sweet Istria, scheduled for August 14, 2026.

A Return to Childhood Flavors

The event, now in its third decade, will once again turn Vižinada into a center of sweet aromas and tastes. Hundreds of homemade cakes, prepared according to the recipes of Istrian grandmothers, transport visitors back to their childhood days, with a full-day program designed for the whole family.

The musical headliner of this year's celebration will be singer Luka Basi, whose performance will further enrich the diverse offerings from Istria's finest producers, as reported by Istra Terra Magica.

Poreč Celebrates Istrian Garlic

Last weekend, Freedom Square in Poreč hosted the 7th Istrian Garlic Festival. The two-day event brought together growers, experts, and numerous guests, with the official opening attended by Poreč Mayor Loris Peršurić, Deputy Mayor Nataša Basanić Ćuš, Istrian County Prefect Boris Miletić, Ezio Pinzan as Head of the Agriculture Department, and members of the Istrian Garlic Growers Association.

As part of the festival, a round table titled "Istrian Garlic, Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow" was held, discussing quality systems, preservation of indigenous varieties, and production development. Visitors also enjoyed educational presentations on local Istrian garlic varieties, disease and pest control, and ways to improve cultivation, along with demonstrations of making traditional Istrian garlic braids.

IQ Labels for 2026 Awarded

The festival's central event was the awarding of the IQ, Istrian Quality labels for 2026. The recipients of this prestigious label are:

Gastronomic Spectacle with Chef Sardot

The culinary segment of the program was led by Chef Gianpaolo Sardot, who prepared boškarin in teran sauce with roasted garlic pâté and creamy polenta, as well as tagliatelle aglio, olio e peperoncino for visitors. Additionally, guests could sample garlic-infused ice cream, fritters, toast, and hot dogs, along with other products from local exhibitors.

The festival once again underscored the importance of preserving indigenous varieties and promoting local agricultural production, connecting local producers with a wider audience through an educational and gastronomic program.
