A technician discovered the suspicious object between the sleepers on the tracks, right at the entrance to the Treuchtlingen railway station, a town in Franconia south of Nuremberg.
Special police forces inspected the object, and a team from the federal police's bomb disposal unit is conducting an analysis to determine whether it poses a real threat. According to the Central Franconia Police Department, the object has been X-rayed, but the images are still being analyzed.
"Suspicion of an explosive has not yet been ruled out," police said, adding that further expert examination is required.
Emergency services have "as a precaution evacuated a number of buildings in the immediate vicinity," according to a police statement reported by Dnevnik.hr.
State police said the traffic blockade would remain in place for now and could not say when road and rail traffic would resume. According to the railway operator, several regional rail lines are affected.
On the affected routes, transport will be provided by buses and larger-capacity taxis, while long-distance trains have been rerouted to bypass the area.
Treuchtlingen has around 13,000 residents and lies between Nuremberg and Ingolstadt. Although the town was once a significant railway hub, the high-speed line between Munich and Nuremberg runs further east and is not affected by this suspension.
