According to Jutarnji list, the City of Zagreb has launched a tender for extraordinary maintenance of the pedestrian zone in the corridor of Silvija Strahimira Kranjčevića Street, with an estimated value of 300,000 euros. The project covers approximately 152 meters along the southern edge of the stadium, and the contract would be signed for a period of two months after the contractor takes over the work.
Pedestrian Zone Instead of Parking
The most visible change will be the removal of existing perpendicular car parking spaces along the project area. In their place, a significantly more spacious pedestrian zone will be created. The corridor width will range between 8.45 and 9.82 meters, with a central section, four meters wide, reserved for pedestrians.
On both sides of the corridor, bicycle parking will be installed, each two meters wide, totaling 304 spaces. The racks will be of the "clamp" type, and the final surface will be made of concrete pavers measuring 120 by 40 centimeters, in two shades of gray.
Greenery, Accessibility, and Drainage
The project also includes preserving the existing high greenery. Green islands measuring 120 by 120 centimeters will be created around the trees, and ramps for people with reduced mobility will be installed at pedestrian crossings, with recessed curbs and appropriate slopes.
This project is not just a renovation of the sidewalk surface. Due to the removal of perpendicular parking, the edge of the northern traffic lane of Kranjčevićeva will also change, so new road curbs and drainage inlets will be installed. As part of the project, special emphasis is placed on the stormwater drainage system: given the low longitudinal slopes of the planned roadway, three linear channels have been designed, totaling approximately 76 meters in length, and the old drainage inlets will be replaced with new units placed along the new road edge. The project includes a total of 11 new drainage inlets.
Connection with Stadium Reconstruction
Although incomparable in value to the reconstruction of the stadium itself, the tender is interesting precisely because of its connection to that project. The execution design of the pedestrian zone is aligned with the reconstruction project of Kranjčevićeva, and the future pedestrian area should form a unique whole with the access square. As justification for this project, the designers also cite the expected increase in pedestrian traffic after the stadium is renovated.
In this way, another segment of infrastructure necessary for the normal functioning of the new stadium in Kranjčevićeva Street is being completed. The completion of this work is also of great importance for the broader picture of Zagreb's stadiums: when clubs move from Maksimir to Kranjčevićeva, it will open the possibility for the start of work on the new stadium at Maksimirska 128. Although this tender is not an official condition for the start of work at Maksimir, it is part of the stadium's surroundings arrangement, which is of utmost importance in that process.
Strict Deadlines and Special Conditions
Given that the project of demolishing the old and building a new stadium at Maksimir depends on the dynamics of the work at Kranjčevićeva, strict deadlines have been set. The entire job has a deadline of two months, and the selected contractor is obliged to submit a detailed execution plan within five days of being introduced to the work, including a list of workers, teams, and machinery. If delays are noticed during execution, the contractor has 15 days to catch up.
The work is further complicated by the multitude of existing and planned installations located in the Kranjčevićeva Street area. There are special rules for work near gas pipelines: on certain sections, machine excavation is prohibited, so work must be done manually, with the presence of a distributor representative. The area also includes a district heating network, and the project also records electrical infrastructure that needs to be adequately protected during the works.
