A healthy lifestyle is often associated with regular exercise and a balanced diet, but Dr. Jeremy London, a cardiac surgeon, emphasizes that this isn't everything. He points out that there is an even more important habit. As he says, sleep is of utmost importance for health, particularly after age 40, because the body becomes more vulnerable to the long-term effects of poor habits.

Dr. London believes that sleep must be a top priority. He warns that lack of sleep can adversely affect nearly every aspect of health and can negate the positive effects of a healthy diet and exercise.

Sleep as a Necessity, Not a Luxury

"Sleep is a necessity, not a luxury, I keep repeating that. People often say, 'I'll sleep when I'm dead,' but it's exactly that mindset that can have serious long-term consequences," said Dr. Jeremy London, a cardiac surgeon, in an Instagram post.

He explains that chronic sleep deprivation affects hormones, metabolism, and energy. As we age, testosterone levels naturally decline, insulin sensitivity decreases, and the body processes glucose differently. At the same time, appetite increases, leading many to unconsciously consume several hundred more calories than usual.

"You can eat healthily and exercise regularly, but if you're chronically sleep-deprived, much of that benefit can be lost," the doctor warns.

How Much Sleep Is Enough?

Experts recommend that most healthy adults get at least seven hours of sleep per night, with seven to nine hours being ideal. Sleep needs vary by age. Teenagers need eight to ten hours, while younger children need more due to rapid growth and development. For example, newborns sleep 14 to 17 hours a day, including naps.

Sleep is the time when the body recovers and repairs itself. During the night, the body regulates hormones, strengthens the immune system, repairs muscles, and processes information from the day. Quality sleep is linked to numerous health benefits, such as better heart and blood vessel function, improved blood sugar control, healthy weight, reduced stress, better mood and focus, and a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, and heart disease.

Habits to Avoid

In addition to the importance of sleep, Dr. London also points out some habits he considers very harmful. First is smoking, including e-cigarettes, which he calls one of the worst things for the body. Next is alcohol, which he says harms the entire body, while sugary carbonated drinks he calls "liquid death" due to their high sugar content and association with numerous health problems.

Also on the list is white flour, such as white bread and pasta, which he advises eating in moderation as part of a balanced diet. Finally, he urges that sleep should not be sacrificed for work, social obligations, or other activities.

"Don't neglect sleep for everything else. It's a challenge I sometimes struggle with myself, but it's worth making a priority," concluded Dr. London.
