Tomislav Paškvalin, one of the greatest water polo players in the history of the former state, after a brilliant playing career dedicated himself to administrative roles and left an indelible mark on domestic sport.
Born in Zagreb on August 29, 1961, Tomislav Paškvalin is a name that still commands respect in water polo circles. A double Olympic champion, a devastating left-handed attacker, and an excellent defensive player, he built his rich career on the foundations of perseverance and fanatical dedication to the sport. His journey from the Betina-based Brodograditelj to the world's pools and leading positions in Croatian sport is a story of exceptional talent and an even greater work ethic.
He was introduced to water polo in Betina on the island of Murter, where his father was born and where he spent his summers. He took his first sports steps in the Brodograditelj team under the guidance of coaches Saša Masnec and Joško Bračić. Although he flirted with basketball, handball, and football, his destiny was on the water. Upon returning from summer vacation in 1973, he came to the Sava River and became a water polo player for Mladost, where, under the coaching of Duško Baždar, he would grow into a world-class player. He played for the first team of the trophy-laden club from 1975 to 1988.
His international career with the former Yugoslavia was marked by a series of medals that few can replicate. The crowning achievement was two Olympic gold medals, won at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles and four years later in Seoul in 1988. He added a World Championship gold in Madrid in 1986 and triumphed at the FINA Cup in Thessaloniki in 1987. At the European Championships, he earned silver medals in Sofia in 1985 and Strasbourg in 1987. He won Mediterranean Games gold in Casablanca in 1983 and took silver already wearing the Croatian national team cap in 1993 in Languedoc-Roussillon. At the Universiade, he won silver in Kobe in 1985 and bronze in Zagreb in 1987.
A special place in his memories is occupied by the final of the 1984 Olympic Games. Yugoslavia was trailing 5-2 against the hosts, the USA, but eventually turned the game around and won the gold. "That is one of those matches that come once in a career. No, once in a hundred years. The gold was at stake, and we played in front of twenty thousand people. I scored the first goal; the Americans, as hosts, fielded the strongest team they ever had before or after at the Olympics. If they had won the gold, water polo would probably have become professional in America. They lost that battle of nerves, and water polo has remained at the collegiate level there to this day," Paškvalin recalled for Dnevno.hr.
After leaving Mladost in 1988, his talent was recognized by major European clubs. From 1988 to 1990, he played for the Italian club Pro Recco, and then for Brescia from 1990 to 1992. A French stint followed with Nice from 1993 to 1994, where he won the championship in 1993 and the French Cup in 1994. After that, he returned to Brescia, where he played until 1996, and finished his career with Zagreb's Medveščak in 1998 at the age of 37, after nearly 20 years of professional play.
A law graduate, Tomislav Paškvalin did not rest for long. In 1997, he became the director of the Croatian Olympic Center Bjelolasica, a position he held until 2008. From 2002 to 2009, he was the president of the Medveščak Water Polo Club, and from 2000 to 2004, a member of the Mladost presidency. He also served on the capital projects committee for the City of Zagreb from 2006 to 2008. His involvement in sport continued through membership on the Management Board of the Croatian Water Polo Federation, the vice-presidency of the Croatian Olympic Club, and the position of director of the Center for Research and Development in Sport from 2010. Later, he was also a member of the Supervisory Board of the Croatian Olympic Committee and president of the Zagreb Olympic Club.
Water polo has remained a family tradition. His son, Fran Paškvalin, followed in his father's footsteps and was a Croatian national team water polo player, confirming that sporting genes and a love for the sport do not fade in the Paškvalin family.
