Reddit user shared a terrifying experience with the Cvita wardrobe, claiming that heavy mirrors peeled off and began to fall toward his children. Prima responded that no significant number of complaints has been recorded for older models.
A home should be a safe haven, but for one Croatian family, what happened in the bedroom could have ended in tragedy. Reddit user mmunic publicly spoke out about a dangerous defect in a wardrobe purchased at the Prima furniture store, appealing to other customers to be extremely cautious.
At the center of his complaint is the 'Cvita' wardrobe, a large piece of furniture with sliding doors on which three mirrors are mounted. It is precisely these mirrors, attached with adhesive tape, that became a source of fear.
Mmunic described the dramatic moment that his wife prevented at the last second. "We had a situation where my one-year-old child and another child of three years were sleeping on the double bed under the wardrobe, and my wife, by sheer luck, saw the mirror detaching from the wardrobe and falling toward the children," he wrote in his post on the Reddit subforum Croatia.
Although he did not have the opportunity to precisely measure the mirrors, he estimated they were about 1.2 meters wide, 0.5 meters high, and weighed approximately 10 kilograms. "Of all the possible ways to attach these mirrors, such as glue and the like, they decided to stick them with tape," he added, emphasizing that he does not even want to think about the terrible consequences that the fall of such a heavy object could have had on his young children.
The customer particularly emphasized that he did not assemble the wardrobe himself. "That wardrobe, like their other products, was installed by Prima's installers for a fee, and no modifications have ever been made to them since installation," he claimed.
After reporting the problem, mmunic asked Prima to inform all owners of the disputed wardrobe about the danger via social media and to offer them free reinstallation of the mirrors in a safe manner. He also threatened to report the matter to the relevant inspectorates.
"Thank you for pointing out the aforementioned defects. As previously stated, the new series of Cvita Next wardrobes has a different method of mirror attachment. According to our records, on older models of the Cvita wardrobe, no significant number of complaints related to the mirror has been recorded so far," was Prima's response, which the customer shared after 15 days of waiting.
This response did not reassure him in the least. "So, not enough people have reported the problem, so it's not a problem if someone gets hurt in the future," commented the disappointed customer, adding that he has not yet filed an official report with the State Inspectorate because he is not sure where to start. "I asked for nothing except that they inform and compensate customers in the form of reinstalling the mirrors, which I consider fair. They refused."
Shortly after the post, another Reddit user came forward with their own bad experience. They claim that on their Cvita wardrobe, the glass also detached from the door, and the doors themselves warped. But the problems did not stop there.
"Then the bed, measuring 80 x 200 centimeters, collapsed; the parallel 'slats' that hold the base broke," they wrote. They described that the slats were made of pressed sawdust in a cardboard cover, joined with staples. "I tore it off with my fingers and threw it away; it crumbles under hand pressure. The entire set, wardrobes plus bed, did not last even three months," they complained, adding that the furniture was used by a child weighing only 35 kilograms over approximately 90 days.
A micro-manufacturer also joined the discussion, pointing out double standards in product safety responsibility. "As a micro-manufacturer who exports 30 to 50 of my own products monthly, which cost 50 euros, I must have a hundred papers, meet a thousand conditions, and guarantee with all my assets that my products will not harm anyone. I see no reason why we should forgive a multimillion-dollar company for that," they wrote. They also emphasized that large companies should have all internal risk assessments and documented tests, from chemical compositions of paints to mechanical testing.
Dnevno.hr sent an inquiry to Prima to obtain their official statement regarding the method of attaching mirrors to the Cvita wardrobe and the potential safety risk. An inquiry was also sent to the State Inspectorate to check whether they had received similar reports from citizens and whether they had conducted inspections. Responses from both parties will be published as soon as they are received.
